Created by Loïc Dubigeon, the Hermès scarf “Soies Volantes” (Flying Silks) was issued in 1991 and never reissued, which makes it a rare and sought-after piece for collectors devoted to the Maison.

With this scarf, Loïc Dubigeon pays vibrant tribute to traditional Chinese kites, true works of art made of bamboo and painted silk. In China, these creations have enchanted the sky for centuries, notably during the Qingming festival and the Weifang Festival, where flying birds, fish, elephants and dragons unfold in a colourful choreography.

With “Soies Volantes”, Loïc Dubigeon weaves a link between Chinese tradition and the art of movement. Each kite depicted evokes lightness, freedom and the heritage of a thousand-year-old craft. By making silk fly, the artist celebrates travel, cultural transmission and the poetry of the sky. But behind their poetic grace lies a fascinating story: the first Chinese kites, created more than 2,500 years ago, had a military use. It was Marco Polo, in 1282, who brought them back to Europe, captivated by their beauty and their symbolism. Thanks to the Silk Road, these airborne objects conquered the world, blending history, exoticism and dreams of elsewhere: everything this scarf embodies.
