Mosaic - HERMES SCARF 90 CM

Sale priceCHF 563.00

This Hermès scarf, entitled Mosaïque but also known as Les Auriges , features a motif inspired by a 3rd-century AD Roman mosaic (from the Villa of the Severan Triumphs in Baccano, now housed in the Palazzo Massimo museum in Rome). Designed by Hugo Grygkar in 1954 , it is a rare and highly sought-after collector's item that has never been reissued since its creation . Despite some minor wear and a few pulled threads, its condition remains remarkable, making its availability on the market particularly exceptional. The rolled hem is intact, with no holes. There are two small stains (see second-to-last photo). It comes with an Hermès box , which is in good condition. Although dating from the 1960s, the box is not the original.

This Hermès scarf is inspired by the fascinating world of the charioteers, the drivers of Greco-Roman antiquity. These charioteers played a central role in chariot races, one of the most popular spectacles of the time, driving quadrigas – chariots drawn by four horses – in grand competitions in Roman circuses or on battlefields.

The charioteer symbolized mastery, speed, and strength—qualities perfectly aligned with Hermes' equestrian spirit. Dressed in a short tunic, sometimes wearing a helmet, and armed with a short-handled whip, the charioteer wrapped the reins around his waist to prevent them from being lost during the frenzied races. To protect himself from chafing, he wore a leather strap corset, providing both support and safety.

Chariot races were true spectacles, where charioteers competed in teams representing the four seasons:

  • Prasina (greens) : associated with spring
  • Russea (reds) : linked to summer
  • Veneta (blues) : symbols of autumn
  • Albata (whites) : linked to winter

These competitions captivated the crowds and generated considerable betting. Among the famous charioteers, Diocles stands out in particular. Active for 24 years, he won 1,462 out of 4,257 races, accumulating winnings surpassing those of the emperor himself, and remains in history as the greatest charioteer of all time.

This scarf embodies a world of power and elegance, perfectly reflecting Hermès' equestrian heritage. The symbolism of the horse, omnipresent in the house's creations, is enriched here by a tribute to ancient traditions, where art and history combine to elevate this exceptional piece.
